Jian Wang, Shandong University, P.R.China
An economist by training, Professor Jian Wang, has a long history of policy-focused research in public health in China. He is experienced in working and consulting with international researchers to provide evidence-based health policy in China. For example, he worked with his Chinese colleagues as well as Karen Eggleston from Stanford to provide evidence-based public health to the public through the media and to provide policy briefs to decision makers during the SARS outbreak. From 2010 to 2012, he led a team to conduct a Hepatitis B vaccination survey, funded by the Research Council of Norway, including 9700 households across 7 provinces in China. This work was very policy relevant - building a cohort to address the importance of reducing the economic barriers to accessing the vaccination, particularly in rural China. Currently, he is working with researchers from Norway and Singapore, in a study funded by the National of Natural Science Foundation of China and the Research Council of Norway, which is examining differences between patients’ benefits, interests of doctor, and other benefits determined by doctors. This study will help strengthen the supervision of medical practice and create a buffer for the economic game between doctors and patients. It also will provide the evidence and scientific basis to support the establishment of an altruistic health care system and for new health care reform in China.
Professor Wang is a board member of public policy China Healthy 2020 committee and was a semi-finalist of Global Development Awards and Medals Competition 2009 for Japanese award for Outstanding Research on Development. He has received project grants from the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and National Population and Family Planning Commission of China, and WB.
