Dr Giuseppina Rizzo was born in Messina on June 15th 1968. On July 15th 1993sShe graduated with the highest grades and academic honors. During the same year in November she achieved the qualification to practice her profession. In the academic year 1994/1995 she attended the "Advanced Course in Immunocytochemistry" held at the Institute of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Naples. In April she attended a specific course at the Department of Environmental Biology (Siena) to acquire new knowledges about the use of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope. In May the 16th, 1997 she acquired her PhD in “Morphological Science” . In 2000 she obtained the title of specialist in “Sports Medicine”, with the highest grades and academic honors. In December 2005 she became an assistant professor of Anatomy in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Messina. She teaches anatomy to degrees of Medicine and Surgery, laboratory of technicians, audiometry and logopedist technicians.
Since 2000 her field of scientific interest concerns the interaction skeletal and smooth muscle fibers to extracellular matrix. In particular the research is focused on DGC (distrophin glycoprotein complex) and vinculin- talin- integrin. These systems are two different protein- complex which regulate the interaction between cytoskeleton to extracellular matrix. The research on DGC complex and VTI was performed on normal and pathological skeletal muscle fibers.
The original results of her research have been personally presented at the congress of Anatomy. In the accademic year 2005/2006, as Faculty Membership, she was a Professor at the Summer School “neuroanatomy an clinical neuroscience “ University of Messina – VCU Richmond (VA) , with her lesson “Spinal Cord” A CLSM image on research of the periodontal ligament published in "International Journal of Molecular Medicine " was used by the Publisher for the cover sheet (Int J Mol Med 21:545-54, 2008). she’s also focused her research on the SNC connectivity the last yars. The original results of her research have been pubblished on high impact factor journals: Mov Disord, Front Hum Neurosci ,European journal of histochemistry, International Journal of Molecular Medicine, Journal of Histochemistry and Cytochemistry. Since 2013 she is a referee of Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research for the projects evaluation. She is currently a component of REPRISE, Register of Expert Peer-Reviewers for Italian Scientific Evaluation, an expert peer-reviewer expert for Italian scientific assessment, established at the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR).
